Wilkes, Peter Singleton {I41303} (b. CA. 1827, d. 2 JAN 1900)
Note: "Biographical Register of the CONFEDERATE CONGRESS" by Ezra J. Warner and W.
Buck Yeams, Louisiana State Univ. Press.

PETER SINGLETON WILKES (Missouri), according to the record of his enlistment
as a private in the 3rd Missour Calvary (Confed.), was born in Maury Co., TN.
His grave maker in Rural Cem. Stockton, CA., states that the year of birth
was 1827. Almost nothing reliable of veriable has been written about his
antebellum career. According to an obiturary in the Jefferson City, MO. State
Tribune, he was graduated from college in Missiouri in 1852, and a week
afterward was elected to the state legislature. The second statement is
demonstrable false, and the first can not be verified.
He is usually described as a "Sprinfield Lawyer" However, his name cannot be
found in the 1860 census of Greene Co., MO., nor in any of the surrounding
counties. He gave his occupation as "lawyer" when he inlisted in the 3rd.
Missouri on 2 Jan., 1862. According to his obituary in Stockton, CA., Record,
he served in the commissary department and somehow acquired the honorific of
"Colonel", by which he was known in later life. Presumably while still
serving in the army, he was elected by the soldier and refugee vote to the
2nd. Regular Confederate Congress in May, 1864 and took his seat on Nov. 8th.
(his opponent for this seat was Thomas W. Freeman).

Wilkes greatly admired President Jefferson Davis and in the last desperate
months of the Confederacy centered his attention on giving him every power
that a commander-in-chief might need. His sole reservation was his
unexplanined refusal to draft and arm slaves. Thie ridgid Missouri "Test
Oath" drove him from the state at the end of the war, and he made his way to
California, some say by way of Mazatlan, Mexico, where he may have tarried for
some years. Upon his arrival in Stockton, CA., which was to be his permanent
home, Wilkes formed a law partnership with the celebrated former Chief Justice
David S. Terry of the California Supremen Court. Like Wilkes, Terry was a
former Confederate; his exploits included killing a United States Senator and
some years later being killed himself by the bidyguard of United States
Supreme Court Justice Stephen J. Field, who he threatened with violence.
Wilkes died in Stockton on January 2, 1900, and was buried there.
